About this build

Moving a website to a new host sounds risky and mostly isn't — as long as you do the steps in the right order and don't touch the domain until the end.

A full migration with zero downtime, including the DNS part that makes everyone nervous.

What you'll be able to do afterwards

  • Take a complete backup you can actually restore from
  • Move files and database to a new host
  • Test the site before any DNS changes
  • Switch nameservers with no downtime
  • Sort out SSL and email so nothing breaks

Before you start

  • An existing site and a new host to move it to
  • Access to wherever your domain is registered

Test before you switch, not after

You can view a site on its new host before changing a single DNS record. Do that. Finding a broken database connection while your domain already points at the new server is a much worse afternoon.
